
Getting Your Poultry House Heating Right
When you’re setting up an automated poultry farm, it’s easy to look at infrared lamps as just another line item on a spreadsheet. But here’s the thing: the lamps you pick basically decide how much money you’re going to bleed every month on electricity. Most people treat heat like a commodity. They don’t. If you get the wavelength and wattage wrong, you aren’t actually warming your birds—you’re just paying to heat your ceiling. The wattage trap I see this all the time. Buyers pick a “standard” wattage without actually looking at the heat load of their building. In a high-density house, your wattage needs to play nice with your ventilation. If you go too heavy on the wattage, your thermostats will kick in and out constantly. We call that short-cycling. It’s a nightmare. It fries your relays and sends your power bill through the roof. Also, do yourself a favor and match your voltage to your local grid (usually 110V or 220V). Using transformers just to make a lamp work is a waste; they bleed energy as heat before it even reaches the birds. Shortwave vs. Longwave (Which one actually works?) This is where it gets technical, but keep it simple. Shortwave lamps are fast. They hit the target directly. They don’t care if the air is cold; they just warm the birds. If you’ve got a drafty house, this is your only real move. You can keep those chicks cozy without having to crank the ambient temperature to an insane, expensive level. Longwave is a different story. It’s slower and warms the air around it. Check your ceiling height before you buy. If your ceilings are high, longwave is basically useless. The heat just drifts away and vanishes before it ever touches the floor. The “Cheap Lamp” Tax It’s tempting to go for the budget option. But cheap lamps usually use low-grade quartz tubes. When you put them on an automated cycle, they burn out fast. Suddenly, you’re spending more on labor and ladders to replace dead bulbs than you ever saved on the purchase price. Then there’s the spacing. Get the lamp too close, and you’re scorching your birds. Too far, and you’re just heating the air again. It’s a balancing act. Getting the spacing and wattage exactly right is the only way to actually lower your KWh per bird.
