
Let’s Talk Halogen Infrared Heating
Ever wonder why some heaters just feel… faster? That’s the magic of halogen infrared lamps. Instead of your typical heating element, these use a tungsten filament tucked inside a quartz tube filled with halogen gas. The gas is the secret sauce. It keeps the filament from burning out even when it’s running incredibly hot, which means you get a massive burst of shortwave IR energy.
Getting the Power Right
When you’re picking out a lamp, everything comes down to voltage and wattage. If you go with a 400V system, for example, you can use longer tubes without worrying about the heat dropping off at the ends. You get a nice, even glow across the whole piece you’re working on. And the speed? It’s wild. You can hit your target temperature in seconds. But here’s the catch: these things are power-hungry. If your wiring isn’t beefy enough to handle the peak current, you’ll see voltage drops. And once that happens, your heating consistency goes right out the window.
The Hardware Side of Things
We stick with quartz glass because it doesn’t block the IR waves—it just lets them fly right through. Some of our tubes even have special coatings to tweak the heat or keep the glass from getting gunked up during a messy process. As for the plugs, we mostly use R7s or SK15 bases. They’re pretty standard, so they usually slide right into most industrial ovens. Just make sure the fit is tight. A loose connection is a recipe for disaster; it leads to arcing, and before you know it, you’ve melted your socket.
Making it Work in the Real World
If you’re running PET blowing or curing lines, these lamps are basically the gold standard. They react instantly, which is exactly what you need when you’ve got a high-speed conveyor belt moving. But you’ve got to be careful. That intensity is a bit of a double-edged sword. If your lamp is too close to the material, you’re going to warp your parts. It’s all about dialing in that distance. Plus, don’t forget to keep the ends of the lamps cool. If the seals overheat, they’ll fail, and then you’re looking at a lot of downtime.
