
Stop Turning Your Factory Into a Sauna
If you’ve ever walked into a veneer glue shop in July, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s oppressive. Most shops rely on convection heaters—basically giant blow-dryers—that heat up every single cubic inch of air just to get the glue to set. It’s a waste of energy, and it makes the shop floor feel like a furnace. We do things differently. We use directional infrared (IR) heating.
How it actually works
Think of it like the sun on a cold winter day. You can feel the warmth on your skin even if the air around you is freezing. That’s because IR doesn’t bother heating the air; it sends energy straight to the target. In this case, the target is the glue line. We tune these systems to hit the specific “sweet spot” of the adhesive. The glue cures quickly, but the air in the room stays chill. You stop fighting the thermostat because you aren’t trying to heat the entire building just to dry some wood.
Keeping the heat where it belongs
Nobody wants to feel a blast of heat hitting them in the face while they’re working. That’s why we use reflectors and laser-focused positioning. We keep the energy beamed right onto the veneer surface. No stray heat drifting up to the ceiling or baking your operators. Plus, your HVAC system can finally take a break. It doesn’t have to work overtime to fight the curing process because the heat goes from the filament to the glue—and nowhere else.
The tricky part (and how we fix it)
IR is fast. Seriously fast. It blows traditional ovens out of the water. But there’s a catch: distance is everything. If the lamps are too close, you’ll scorch the veneer. Too far, and the heat thins out, which slows your whole line down. It’s a delicate balance. To take the guesswork out of it, we plug in a PID controller with an IR sensor. It watches the surface temperature in real-time and adjusts on the fly, so it doesn’t matter if you switch wood species or change your glue thickness. And of course, we add proper shielding. Your crew stays safe, and the wood stays perfect.
